The DNA of Great Metal Fabrication
When the architects of Milwaukee’s new Discovery World museum presented their design for a
"double helix" staircase that resembles a strand of DNA, they contacted Grunau Metals for advice on it’s fabrication. One of the challenges was figuring out how to curve the handrail side cables which are a standard design element in other Discovery World staircases and catwalks. If the cable is straight, it’s no problem, but curving the cable to work with the curvature of the staircases presented a problem. Grunau suggested curved stainless steel rod that would retain visual consistency with the remainder of the building without compromising the design integrity of the project. The results were spectacular as seen in this pre-opening photo. Grunau is a company that likes to roll up its sleeves when it comes to a challenge, and isn’t afraid to take a swing at a curveball.
